5 July 1915, MUDROS

Landed MUDROS. Took over Division Office on air line from №2 Section working to N&M (Naval & Military) office with an office tapped in for 38th Brigade.

6 July 1915

Took over 38th Brigade Office &sent 3 operators to N&M office to work line to Division & 38th Brigade. 38th Brigade left &closed office.

7 July 1915

Set up Commutator at Division HQ & laid lines to CRE & Signal Company camp.

8 July 1915

L of C Signal Company completed air line to Pioneer Battalion. Teed into this line & dis’d former line to N&M Station.

9 July 1915

Capt Deakin, 22 drivers & 30 horses & mules arrived.

15 July 1915

Order received to be ready to embark for HELLES at short notice. All equipment, no horses or vehicles.

16 July 1915

Left MUDROS 5.20pm on WHITBY ABBEY. Left 5 men in hospital.

17 July 1915, CAPE HELLES, GALLIPOLI

HQ & №1 Sec landed River Clyde on V Beach 4am (3 officers 80 men) & marched to 13th Division HQ half way up GULLY from W Beach. Took over vibrator & magneto telephone circuits from 29th Division Signal Company.

18 July 1915

Improved circuits & relieved 29th Division operators at 39th & 40th Brigades & 29th Division.

20 July 1915

Laid a spare cable to 39th Brigade — have now 2 vibrators & 1 cable. 38th Brigade attached Naval Division work to us via 42nd Division. 8th Corps laid direct cable to us & we can now get them either direct or via 29th Division.

23 July 1915

Laid fresh phone line to tee in 39th Brigade-29th Division line & cut line in between. 29th & 40th Brigades & 29th Division on separate phone circuits. Heavy shelling — 29th Division & L Division Reserve cables cut. Laid fresh phone line to 39th Brigade. Vibrator & phone cables cut. Laid fresh phone line to 39th Brigade & mended vibrator cables to 39th Brigade & 29th Division. Spare cable to 39th Brigade saved situation. Mended cable to LD in Reserve.

24 July 1915

YBI phone & YDB vibrator wires cut by a bomb from a Taube this afternoon & mended at once.

29 July 1915

Wires reeled up as far as possible & Signal Company handed over to 29th Division. 13th Signal Company embarked for MUDROS.

30 July 1915, MUDROS

ANZAC COVE Arrived 4.30 am. Stayed day at ANZAC. Communication to Brigades by Corps Signal office. Left for №3 outpost at 8pm.

6 August 1915

Sent out cable dets to (i) 40th Brigade at DAMAK KJELIK BAIR; (ii) General COX commanding left assaulting Chn & (iii) General MONASH (Australian Brigade).

7 August 1915

Line run to 38th Brigade.

8 August 1915

Cable communication to 38th Brigade interrupted by NZ Brigade teeing in & general confusion owing to attack. Telegraphic communication greatly disorganised by Staff officers speaking on phones instead of writing their messages. The cable & drums supplied are most unsatisfactory. D111 would be better on much smaller drums. D111 phones should replace Stephens which get out of working order. Division HQ are moving further northwards so laid a new line to keep up communications till office can be moved.

10 August 1915

№3 outpost Division HQ cancelled move & remain №3 outpost.

11 August 1915

Took over lines in №5 Section from NZ Division. 13th Division is much mixed up with NZ & A Division. Genl SHAW commands right or №5 Section, Gen JOHNSTON №6 or left. Took over lines to NZ Mounted Rifles NZ Infantry Brigade with 40th Brigade. Capt CROCKER wounded slight, Spr MacCLURE wounded serious.

12 August 1915

ANZAC laid AC №1 line to us. Repaired old 38th Brigade cable & extended up CHAILAK DERE to NZ Infantry Brigade as a duplicate line.

13 August 1915

Lt MUSSON reorganised №2 Section, vice Lt MOSELEY killed, using remnants of №2 Section. Wired for 1 officer & 26 men to replace casualties. Improved wires to NZ Infantry Brigade & 40th Brigade. Laid a 2nd line to Mounted Brigade on old №3 post.

14 August 1915

Lt MUSSON went to 38th Brigade with the reorganized Section. He tied into 40th Brigade line & continued to 38th Brigade. Capt CROCKER laid direct line to 38th Brigade & 40th Brigade ran a tee line into this.

15 August 1915

38th line continued to 39th Brigade.

16 August 1915

Took over line NZ Division to 29th Brigade & 39th Brigade.

17 August 1915

Spr LOVEWELL wounded. Laid a line up CHAILAK DERE to APEX beyond 40th Brigade for RA observing officer.

19 August 1915

Started polling & treening wires along CHAILAK DERE. Sniped at intervals all day. Wires badly tangled with RA wires which are nearly all out of use. Reeled at long lengths dead wires. ANZAC wires dis. all day. Clear our messages via the wireless station.

20 August 1915

Poling & treening wires. A large quantity light bamboo poles required. 29th Brigade moved & joined up wire. We are through direct to 39th Brigade by this alternate route.

21 August 1915

Completed poling & treening wires. Mounted Brigade moved but laid a line back to our operations at old №3.

22 August 1915

Lt WILSON & 18 men arrived as reinforcements. He goes to 38th Brigade (№2 Section). MUSSON returns to Division HQ.

23 August 1915

DEAKIN & party rearranging lines where cut by new saps. Poling inadvisable in places as offering marks for Turks artillery. Mounted Battalion go to №6 Section & are relieved at old №3 by the Canterbury Battalion.

24 August 1915

Pioneer Battalion to old №1 Post. Communication by DR.

25 August 1915

Laid cable to Pioneer Battalion.

26 August 1915

Pioneer line cut several times & repaired. The old 29th-39th Brigade line picked up. 38th Brigade line extended to 39th Brigade.

28 August 1915

40th Brigade hand over to NZ Infantry Brigade. SWBs take over from Canterbury Battalion on old №3 Post. North & South Lancs form a composite Battalion at KAZLAR CHAIR on a wire to 54 Division.

29 August 1915

162 Brigade 54 Division take over from 38th Brigade. Wire remains for their communications. Spr TAYLOR №4 Section killed.

30 August 1915

Heavily shelled 2½ hours this afternoon. Several wires cut & repaired. 162 Brigade 54th Division take over from 39th Brigade. HQ & 2 Battalions 35 Brigade to LALA BABA.

31 August 1915, LALA BABA — SUVLA BAY

Handed over all wires as they stand to NZ A Division. Signal Company to LALA BABA & took over office — wires in great muddle.

3 September 1915

Lt Wilson has gone sick (№2 Section) so wired for an officer to replace him. 38th Brigade moved to GHAZI BABA, north side of Bay. Composite Battalion at KASLAR CHAIR relieved by Scottish Horse.

4 September 1915

Scottish Horse took over line to KASLAR CHAIR & ran a tee line from it to 2nd Mounted Division HQ on LALA BABA. Line from Reserve Trenches to 30th Brigade cut at R Trenches. 2nd Mid Division took over our line to KASLAR CHAIR which was dis’d at our end (diagram A). 38th Brigade laid a wire to 9th Corps which was connected direct to a line to Test office where it was connected to a new line laid by us to Test office — thus putting us through direct to 38th Brigade.

5 September 1915

39th Brigade teed into our line to their Battalions in the Reserve Trenches & work to them direct.

6 September 1915

Wired DAS for 14 Buzzer Pioneers for Brigade sections as they are far below strength. Started DRs (despatch riders) to 9th Corps for DR regular post daily.

11 September 1915

Draft of 1 m/cyclist & 14 others arrived this evening. 38th Brigade line on poles cut by shells close to our office & mended.

12 September 1915

Several wires cut by our office & mended. Cpls ANDREWS & DAVIDGE wounded by shrapnel.

15 September 1915

Several wires cut by shrapnel & repaired early.

16 September 1915

Worked helio to 38th Brigade.

Capt HE CROCKER evacuated sick. Wired DAS for new officer. Shelled by Turks this afternoon.

Erected wires on new poles to Brigades — 38th Brigade wire cut by shrapnel just outside office & quickly repaired.

Completed policing 39th & 40th A lines & started working on them.

Capt BLOCKLEY [18th RI] & 8 Pioneers arrived. Several lines cut by shelling this afternoon & repaired.

29 September 1915

Received orders to take over 10th Division lines. Lt PAIGE №3 Section to take over №2 Section pro tem.

30 September 1915

New 10th Division lines brought in & tested through.

Visual Stn selected at 10th Division old Battle Post. 10th Division left.

Got a working party of 10. Cyclists employed making signal office at Battle post on LALA BABA. 2nd Lt TULLOCH arrived for duty with the Company.

Asked Corps for 180 light poles.

9 October 1915

Storm last night many poles down. Started new lines to 39th Brigade.

Reported to Staff communication seriously impaired owing to lack of poles & insulating tape.

11 October 1915

Visual test from Battle post to Brigades.

Regimental telephonists found asleep on night duty. 2nd Lt WALKER reported last night with 1 motor cyclist Cpl & 6 operators.

16 October 1915

Poles arrived. Buzzer classes to be started at Brigade Sections.

Asked Corps for 100 poles & reported many of last lots too weak. Completed piping lines at CHOCOLATE HILL.

19 October 1915

70 poles LP arrived last night. Shelling by Turks & 1 line cut close to office.

3 horses from 9th Corps for DRs arrived today — lines to 38th Brigade at CHOCOLATE HILL poled & completed.

Working party of Cyclists engaged in burying tee lines on LALA BABA from Battle post to Brigade lines. Laid in several groups so all can’t be cut by one shell. Terrific S.W. gale all day changing to N. Brigade Sections are very short of men.

18 November 1915

Several poles down last night & wires broken — all mended by 0900. Cyclist working party continuing burying lines.

19 November 1915

Capt BLOCKLEY left. Working party completed burying wires. Much warmer today, no wind.

20 November 1915

Cyclist working party erected 10 poles for 40th Brigade line.

21 November 1915

Cyclist working party erected 15 poles for 40th Brigade line.

Cyclist working party erected 10 poles for 40th Brigade line. Stayed poles for 38th Brigade line.

No day work along lines on account of shelling. Cyclist party ran out wire for new 40th Brigade wire along new line of poles.

24 November 1915

Laid out new 39th Brigade lines in Communications trench as the present ones along the ground are badly worn & liable to being cut. Continued wiring 40th Brigade lines.

25 November 1915

Pinned new 39th Brigade lines in Communications trench. Put wire on new 40th Brigade poles. Stayed 38th Brigade poles. Several wires cut outside office by shells.

26 November 1915

Thunderstorm & heavy rain tonight, everybody flooded out, wires all dis but soon working to 38th Brigade & afterwards to 40th Brigade. Lamp to 40th till wire through. Many poles down. 39th Brigade HQ flooded out & had to move. Ran an extension wire on to main wire & through after some delay.

27 November 1915

Wind & rain all day. Working parties out all day & all lines through. 38th Brigade on CHOCOLATE HILL heavily shelled, Lt TULLOCH wounded & 2 men missing.

28 November 1915

Rain & sleet all day, very cold wind. Sgt WALDRON arrived from MUDROS to take over CQMS.

29 November 1915

Blizzard with snow all day. The bodies of the 2 missing men found, they had been buried alive by a shell. Sent off officers’ kits to A Beach.

30 November 1915

Hard frost day & night. Several poles & all wires broken last night by carts, mended during night, poles repaired today. Repaired wires at Battle post cut by shell.

1 December 1915

Poles & wires to 38th Brigade again cut last night by carts. Repaired today & set still further back from road but carts find their way by groping from pole to pole & leave the road. Several wires cut by shells outside office. Battle post poles further buried.

2 December 1915

All 38th Brigade wires & several poles again broken last night by carts.

4 December 1915

Buried 6 wires from office to escape shells & laid 2 of them in Communications trench & teed them into 38th Brigade lines. Spr HUCKWORTH instrument repairer arrived from MUDROS.

5 December 1915

All lines buried yesterday cut today by heavy shelling.

6 December 1915

Cyclists working party dug trench to depth of 2'3" for wires & new ones laid.

9 December 1915

10 Buzzer Pioneers arrived from 29th Division & posted to Brigade Sections.

10 December 1915

Conference on ground to allot trenches to garrison during evacuation. Arranged communications with Section officers. Several wires cut at office by shells. 6 cable hands arrived from 29th Division, 1 more to come. Evacuated stores.

11 December 1915

1 cable hand arrived from 29th Division.

13 December 1915

Laid tee line from 39th Brigade line to rear Guard position for Brigade when they retire.

14 December 1915

Naval F00 left CHOCOLATE HILL for LALA BABA & uses existing wires to NBS (NEBRUNESI POINT). His 2 wires are now used as spares to 38th Brigade.

15 December 1915

Started 2 lines to SALT LAKE trenches. Laid line along beach (for safety) to Test office & joined it onto the submarine D5 wire to 9th Corps. The Corps line above ground cut by shells this afternoon & luckily we had this new wire. Ran wires to new Signal office all ready for joining up.

16 December 1915

Spr KENNEDY wounded just outside office by shrapnel. CQM Sgt with advance party & kit left this evening. All vibrators except 1 for Corps line sent off & we carry on with Stevens. Laid loop lines along trenches to join into 39th & 40th Brigade lines to avoid shells near office. Completed wires to SALT LAKE trenches. 2nd Mounted Division opened an office at our headquarters. Laid 2 wires from our headquarters to the Battle post & continued one of them on to a trench to be garrisoned during evacuation — both laid along trenches. Laid a wire to C Beach along a Common Trench for use of a staff officer during evacuation.

17 December 1915

Wired up new office ready for moving in which will be safer than our old one. HE shells from new guns (5'9") cut some wires near the office. These shells have very high explosive. Laid new line along Communication trench from RA right & NEBRUNESI POINT for spotting — old one on poles & liable to be cut. 6 men (1 signaller, 5 operators) to us on loan from Corps.

18 December 1915

6 wires at Battle post cut last night by big HE shells — mended this morning. All 38th Brigade wires cut this morning by HE shells just beyond where loop along trench tees into them. We cut №35 wire (9th Corps to ANZAC) at 12.00 & led each end into the office for working direct to Corps & ANZAC. 11th Division took over office & wires of 9th Corps & take all messages for 9th Corps. 9th Corps Signals opened an office on the PEONY sloop & are connected to 11th Division by a submarine D5 wire. We are also in touch by flag & lamp — direct. We moved into new office & through to all stations. Laid a line for a Staff officer at a gap in wire fence on LALA BABA to supervise traffic for evacuation. 39th Brigade came under 11th Division at 17.00.

19 December 1915

Closed down RA Right office at 13.30. Shelled by 5'9" HE shells 12.00–13.00 & many lines cut on poles but of no consequence as we are working on loops laid along trenches. 11th Division wire dis between us & test so ran a temporary line to Test & got through.

20 December 1915, IMBROS

Closed down all stations except Corps, 11th Division & Staff officer at gap in wire at 03.10. Closed down telephone exchange at Test office at 02.15 & the operators came to us to be evacuated with their instruments. Closed down 13th Signals Company office 03.50 after sending to 11th Division & Corps to warn them. Embarked on motor lighters from SOUTH PIER & went to PRINCESS ENA. Landed IMBROS & marched to camp 1½ miles inland. Started 15.00 & marched back & embarked on OSMANIEH for MUDROS. We got away all instruments but had to abandon all wire.

21 December 1915, MUDROS

Left IMBROS 07.30 & arrived MUDROS harbour 12.30. On board all day. Hold flooded by heavy seas & all instruments wet.

22 December 1915, MUDROS WEST

Landed WEST MUDROS & went to PORTIANO CAMP. Our advance party has gone to MUDROS EAST & we have no kit. Wired for advance party.

23 December 1915

Sgt MACGOWAN with2 men & kits & 19 drivers came today. We started trying to get stores & gear from Ordnance as we have nothing except vibrators & telephones. Sent in list of men recommended for mention in despatches for period October to December.

24 December 1915–25 December 1915

Several more men from details rejoined.

26 December 1915

DAS won’t sanction Ordnance to issue all gear I asked for & they suggest instruments & small quantity of wire.

27 December 1915

Major CROCKER went to HELLES with GOC in advance of Division. Gen CAYLEY & half 39th Brigade went also.

28 December 1915

CROCKER went to GULLY BEACH where we take over from 42nd Division. Gen LEWIN arrived GULLY tonight. Signal Company wired for.

29 December 1915

Signal Company embarkation delayed. The GULLY is full of mud & going very bad. Capt DAMMERS 42nd Signal Company showed CROCKER round his wires all on one line of poles & one spare — badly placed for linesmen & all liable to be cut by one shell [diagram].

30 December 1915, V Beach

13th Signal Company arrived V Beach tonight. All kit & baggage not urgently required sent back to MUDROS on the ship with baggage party.

31 December 1915, Gully Beach, Helles

13th Signal Company arrived 06.30. 39th Brigade moved to Y RAVINE & connected on direct wire. 40th Brigade to ZIG ZAG in the GULLY & through on direct wire. We have practically no gear at all as the Ordnance on TONKA after promising to give us what we required gave us nothing at all. I was able to draw 15 Stevens from 8th Corps & gave me an order to take over what I required from 42nd Signals. I took 2 commutators & all his wire as it stood. 13th Signals took over office at 16.00. We took over 32 horses, 3 cable wagons, 4 lumbered & 3 civilian wagons.

1 January 1916

Induction on all Brigade lines both magneto & vibrator is very bad. Linemen out all day trying to discover faults. All wires to 8th Corps, 29th Division & 29th RA cut by shells this afternoon. They are poled along the top off the cliff & are bound to be cut. A sounder & magneto line along the beach was completed today & working to Corps. Have orders to prepare telephone communication to 9 Control posts, 3 redouts, 1 trench & 3 forming up places & PMLO GULLY Beach. 42nd Signals left me 10 extra men for this work.

2 January 1916

Lt ADAMS №4 Section slightly wounded, did not go sick. Evacuated 8 men tonight with baggage. 29th Division wires cut several times by shells. Lt MUSSON reconnoitred routes for Control posts’ wires. Induction on Brigades’ wires still very bad.

3 January 1916

The Brigade Sections are arranging wires to front line of Control posts. Lt MUSSON arranged wires to 2nd line Control posts. I laid lines to 3 Redouts. Sgt HAMILTON laid duplicate wires to PINK FARM trenches. Magneto to 39th Brigade dis but worked well with an Earth return instead of metallic circuit. All wires to 8th Corps cut by shells.

4 January 1916

Completed wires to Redouts, PINK FARM trenches & forming up places & PMLO on beach. Detailed operators for each post and took them round to show them their posts. Also took linesmen & despatch riders to show them the way. Evacuated 14 men with baggage. 39th Brigade, 39th Division and 8th Corps wires all cut by shells. All wires to 2nd line Controls cut this evening.

5 January 1916

Advance party of 17 left 17.30 to embark W Beach. Linemen out & all wires repaired. DRs & linemen sent out at night to find way to Control posts & redouts. Omnibus? W leg cut this evening.

6 January 1916

Drew 3 drums D5 cable from 8th Corps Signals. Lt MUSSON laid 2 wires along the GULLY as reserve for 2nd line Control posts. Instructions this morning that Redouts and PINK FARM trench lines will not be required. Several wires cut by shells.

7 January 1916

Our front line severely shelled today & many wires cut. Turks attacked but repulsed. 2nd Cpls DAWSON, POULSON, CORDELL out all the time repairing wires so that communication was never stopped. 2nd Cpl WEECH delivered despatches to 39th & 40th Brigades under heavy shell & rifle fire. 8 horses sent to W. BEACH for evacuation. All our horses & drivers on duty evacuating stores. Lt MUSSON laid line along the Beach road to W BEACH for the use of our staff officer on night of embarkation, with a short line to Corps HQ in case of break down.

8 January 1916

Changed vibrators at Brigades for Stevens & brought in Magnetos. Send out operators for Control posts. Sent 24 horses for destruction this afternoon as all horses not evacuated are to be shot. Smashed wheels & bodies of wagons. Linemen out all day on Control post wires continually cut. Control posts all working 16.30. Drivers went off 17.30 to embark at W. BEACH. Through on beach road wire to Capt NISBET at W. BEACH. 39th & 40th Brigades closed down 18.00 leaving 13th Division through direct to their Rear Guards. Rear Guards left trenches 11.45. All wires working well, no hitch or breakdown.

9 January 1916

Sea getting very rough. We are to embark at GULLY BEACH in 2 last lighters but one ran aground & was abandoned. All the Company except Major CROCKER, Lt MUSSON & 32 got on board 1st lighter which went out to TALBOT & straight to MUDROS. Others walked to W. BEACH & embarked on lighter 04.00. Towed to IMBROS & landed. Embarked on HMS CHATHAM arrived MUDROS 18.00. Transhipped to MINNEAPOLIS for night. All instruments saved.

10 January 1916, MUDROS

Landed at MUDROS WEST and joined the Company at PORTIANOS camp. The 17 early party arrived this evening. The Company now complete except for odd men scattered about MUDROS.

13 January 1916

Indented for stores to complete our G1098. Got our 3 motor cycles from MUDROS EAST. Started Buzzer & helio classes. Returned 2 commutators and base board to 42nd Signals Company.

18 January 1916

Embarked on TUNISIAN for EGYPT.

21 January 1916, ALEXANDRIA

Arrived ALEXANDRIA, left this afternoon.

22 January 1916, PORT SAID

Arrived PORT SAID.

23 January 1916

Took over from 31st Signal Company who went to KANTARA today. All communication carried out by Egyptian State Telephones.

24 January 1916

Started training the Company in visual & buzzer.

25 January 1916

Had telephone installed in Division new HQ office, on to Civilian & Military exchanges. Rain all day, no training possible.

27 January 1916

№2, 3 & 4 Sections came in for a course of training. Divisions are not to be joined on to Military Exchange. Consequently all their communication will continue to go on the Civilian lines and can be overheard by anyone.

28 January 1916

Started training as a whole Company.

29 January 1916

Training all day.

30 January 1916

Lt TULLOCH rejoined from sick leave and brought 63 men some new and many back from sick leave. Drew all our flags, 5 helios, 4 Elec Lamps and 10 watches from Ordnance. Had telephone installed for 40th Brigade HQ.

Sent back the 10 men of 29th Signal Company. Training all day. Our men left at MUDROS rejoined.
